That was exactly the challenge - and opportunity - during our recent Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) visit to the APM Monaco Jewellery store in Covent Garden, following our work at their Hampstead branch the week prior.

A Hidden System Built for Performance

The store features a water-to-air air conditioning system, cleverly integrated into the space with almost no visible ductwork. In fact, it’s so well concealed that we joked it might be harder to find than the jewellery on display!

But beneath the elegant design lies a powerful climate solution that keeps the store at a consistently comfortable temperature, regardless of the season.

What Is a Water-to-Air System?

A water-to-air system uses water as the medium for heat exchange, rather than air alone. It typically consists of:

A central water-based chiller or heat pump, which heats or cools water
A series of fan coil units (FCUs) that blow air across the cooled or heated water coils, conditioning the space
Piping and pump systems that distribute water throughout the building

This type of system is common in premium or space-constrained environments due to its efficiency, quiet operation, and flexibility in design. It allows for climate control without bulky ductwork, making it ideal for refined, modern interiors like those found in luxury retail.

What We Did During the PPM Visit

Even the most advanced systems need regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency. Our service included:

✔️ Airflow and temperature calibration
✔️ Pump and valve operation testing
